Rushton has never received the recognition he deserves. To tell his story is to relay the history of the slave trade, revolution and the oppression of the common people throughout the world.
At the age of twenty he was second mate on a slave ship. The slaves became sick with a blinding disease and he was the only crew member who would look after them. He contracted the disease and returned to Liverpool blind.
